The Central Bank of The Bahamas’ Annual Art Competition and Exhibition - Open Category
The Central Bank of The Bahamas is proud to announce The Open Category Competition and Exhibition component of its Twenty-seventh Annual Art Competition and Exhibition to be held from Monday, 4 October to Friday, 29 October 2010.
The Award Presentation will take place on Wednesday, October 6th, 2010 at 6:00pm. The objectives of the competition are to identify, recognize, and encourage Bahamian visual artists.
Requirements For Participation
To qualify, participants must be citizens of The Bahamas age, 18 years (as of October 4th, 2010) or older and not registered in secondary school.
Theme
The theme for the 2010 Open Category is ‘A Mighty Push Forward’.
Quantity
Each artist must submit only one (1) work in any of the following media:
- Sculpture
- Drawing
- Painting
- Collage
- Other pictorial presentation
Guidelines
The entries must meet the following requirements:-
- Each entry must be the authentic work of the participating artist.
- Each entry must represent the annual theme of the exhibition.
- Repeat entries will not be accepted. Artists are encouraged to submit original works completed within the last year.
- Artists must demonstrate imagination in concept and in skillful use of materials.
- Sculptures must be free standing or mounted on appropriate bases. There will be no restrictions on size and or material used. Additionally, the work must be appropriate for placement within the Gallery space.
- Paintings and drawings must be properly presented and should be framed unless artist chooses to omit it as part of creative process.
- There are no size restrictions on works however works that are deemed too large or cumbersome to hang may not be accepted for exhibition.
Conditions
- All art works selected for exhibition shall remain in the custody of the Bank for the entire period of the exhibition,
- Artists are requested to indicate whether they wish to sell their work and to submit a suggested price for each piece. All sales by the Bank, on behalf of artists, will be considered binding.
- All works must be collected within 30 days after the end of the exhibition. Works not collected will be suitably disposed of.
Judging
A panel of judges will select the award winning entry. The Central Bank of The Bahamas Award will be a $7,000 cash prize. The winner will also be invited to exhibit at The Central Bank of The Bahamas Art Gallery in 2011 for a solo exhibition.
Qualities such as originality of expression, creative use of materials and presentation, interpretation of theme are among some of the criteria considered. The judges reserve the right to disqualify any entry where there is doubt as to authenticity.
The Central Bank stipulates that the winning entry may become the property of the Bank. If the suggested price exceeds the designated cash prize, The Central Bank reserves the right to pay the monetary difference of said entry.
Participants therefore enter this competition in agreement that the Central Bank be allowed to display winning pieces in any forum including but not limited to the Central Bank’s website.
Application Forms
Entry Forms may be obtained from The Central Bank of The Bahamas, or by download below, or from local news papers and in the Family Islands at the Administrator’s Office or the District Education Offices of the Ministry Of Education.
All entries must be delivered to the Central Bank of The Bahamas no later than Friday, 24th September 2010. Later submissions will not be accepted.

NB:
- Only works of the highest quality and presented in accordance with the guidelines will be judged and exhibited. Works not exhibited will be stored only for 60 days after opening of the exhibition. The Central Bank of The Bahamas will not be responsible for works left beyond this period.
- All sold pieces may be removed from the exhibition after Friday, October 30th.
