28th Annual Art Competition and Exhibition, 2011 - Open/Senior Category

The Central Bank of The Bahamas is proud to announce The Open/Senior Category Competition and Exhibition component of its 28th Annual Art Competition and Exhibition to be held from Monday, 3 October to Friday, 28 October 2011. The objectives of the competition are to identify, recognize, and encourage Bahamian visual artists.

Requirements For Participation

To qualify, participants must be citizens of The Bahamas age, 18 years (as of October 3rd, 2011) or older and not registered in secondary school.

Theme

The theme for the 2011 Open Category is ‘So So Beautiful’.

The curator's not on this year's theme:
Last year's exhibition held the theme 'A Mighty Push Forward', which, although open for interpretation, set a distinct visual tone for the exhibition. This year it has been decided to continue with a conceptual theme that allows for creative interpretation, giving participating artists the opportunity to engage the theme without compromising their individual studio practices. Although the theme will still be a major criterion for this year's judges, it is hoped that the optimistic tone of 'So So Beautiful' will prove a catalyst for efficacious work.

Quantity

Each artist must submit only one (1) work in any of the following media:

Guidelines

The entries must meet the following requirements:-

  1. Each entry must be the authentic work of the participating artist.
  2. Each entry must represent the annual theme of the exhibition.
  3. Repeat entries will not be accepted. Artists are encouraged to submit original works completed within the last year.
  4. Artists must demonstrate imagination in concept and in skillful use of materials.
  5. Sculptures must be free standing or mounted on appropriate bases. There will be no restrictions on size and or material used. Additionally, the work must be appropriate for placement within the Gallery space.
  6. Paintings and drawings must be properly presented and should be framed unless artist chooses to omit it as part of creative process.
  7. All work must be appropriate for placement within the Gallery space. There are no size restrictions on works, however, works that are deemed too large or cumbersome to hang may not be accepted for exhibition.

Judging

  1. A panel of judges will select the award winning entry. The Central Bank of The Bahamas Award will be a $7,000 cash prize. The winner will also be invited to exhibit at The Central Bank of The Bahamas Art Gallery in 2012 for a solo exhibition.
  2. Qualities such as originality of expression, creative use of materials and presentation, interpretation of theme are among some of the criteria considered. The judges reserve the right to disqualify any entry where there is doubt as to authenticity.
  3. The Central Bank stipulates that the winning entry may become the property of the Bank. If the suggested price exceeds the designated cash prize, The Central Bank reserves the right to pay the monetary difference of said entry.
  4. Participants therefore enter this competition in agreement that the Central Bank be allowed to display winning pieces in any forum including but not limited to the Central Bank’s website.

Conditions

  1. All art works selected for exhibition shall remain in the custody of the Bank for the entire period of the exhibition,
  2. Artists are requested to indicate whether they wish to sell their work and to submit a suggested price. All sales by the Bank, on behalf of artists, will be considered binding. The suggested price cannot exceed the designated cash prize of $7,000.00
  3. All sold pieces may be removed from the exhibition after Wednesday, 28 October, 2011
  4. All works must be collected within 10 days after the end of the exhibition. Works not collected will be suitably disposed of.
  5. the Central Bank stipulates that the winning entry may become the property of The Central Bank of The Bahamas.
  6. Participants therefore enter this competition in agreement that The central Bank of The Bahamas be allowed to display winning pieces in any forum including but not limited to The central Bank of The Bahamas' website

The deadline for ALL submissions is 5:00pm, Friday, 23 September, 2011. Later submissions will NOT be accepted.

The Exhibition Opening and Award Presentation will take place at 6:00pm, Wednesday, 5 October.
