The Central Bank of The Bahamas’ Annual Art Competition and Exhibition - The High School Junior Category
The Central Bank of The Bahamas is proud to announce the High School Junior Category of its Twenty-seventh Annual Art Competition and Exhibition to be held from Monday, 1 November to Friday, 30 November, 2010.
The Grand Opening and Awards Presentation will take place on Wednesday, 17th November, 2010 at 5:30pm.
The objectives of the competition are to identify, recognize, and encourage young Bahamians who demonstrate talent in the visual arts.
Requirements For Participation
To qualify, participants must be citizens of The Bahamas, currently enrolled in secondary school, who are not involved in commercial sales of artwork. The competition will also allow recent high school graduates, who must be below the age of 18 and not yet attending college, to participate.
Theme
There are no restrictions as to the theme of works to be entered in the competition, however, works reflecting aspects of Bahamian culture and of an experimental nature are encouraged.
Quantity
Each artist must submit three (3) works in any of the following media:
- Sculpture
- Drawing
- Painting
- Collage
- Other pictorial presentation
If the artist submits works in more than one category of the above media, three (3) works are required for each category. Failure to present the required number of works may result in disqualification from the competition and exhibition.
Guidelines
The entries must meet the following requirements:-
- Each entry must be the authentic work of the participating artist.
- Repeat entries will not be accepted. Artists are encouraged to submit original works completed within the last year.
- Artists must demonstrate imagination in concept and in skillful use of materials.
- Sculptures must be free standing or mounted on appropriate bases. There will be no restrictions on size and or material used. However, wood, stone and metal will be preferred. Additionally, the work must be appropriate for placement within the Gallery space.
- Paintings and drawings must be properly presented and should be framed unless artist chooses to omit it as part of creative process.
- ALL TWO DIMENSIONAL WORKS MUST HAVE SCREW EYES AND HANGING WIRE.
- Two-dimensional art works are encouraged to be no larger than 30” by 40”. Works that are deemed too large or cumbersome to hang may not be accepted for exhibition.
Conditions
- All art works selected for exhibition shall remain in the custody of the Bank for the entire period of the exhibition.
- Artists are requested to indicate whether they wish to sell their work and to submit a reasonable suggested price for each piece. All sales by the Bank, on behalf of artists, will be considered binding.
- All works must be collected within 30 days after the end of the exhibition. Works not collected will be suitably disposed of.
Judging
A panel of judges will select the award winning entries which will be eligible to receive cash prizes.
Scholarships will be awarded to deserving artists based on their overall presentation and the assessment by the judges. The scholarships will be tenable at the College of The Bahamas or any accredited College outside The Bahamas for the study of art. Awardees who do not wish to study art will forfeit the awards.
Special Awards
- Governor’s Choice Award - This will be presented to the artist of one piece selected by the Governor of The Central Bank of The Bahamas.
- Best Young Artist Award - This award will go to a student 14 years or under exhibiting the most promising work.
- Special Scholarship Award - This award will be given, in addition to the usual scholarship awards, to the deserving individual towards the completion of a two year Associate’s Degree in Art at The College of The Bahamas.
- Most Outstanding Sculpture Award - This award will be presented to the sculptor exhibiting the most promise.
Qualities such as originality of expression, creative use of materials and presentation are among some of the criteria considered. The judges reserve the right to disqualify any entry where there is doubt as to authenticity.
The Central Bank stipulates that the winning entries may become the property of the Bank. Participants therefore enter this competition in agreement that the Central Bank be allowed to display winning pieces in any forum including but not limited to the Central Bank’s website. All other entries may be offered for sale during the exhibition.

Entry Forms may be obtained from The Central Bank of The Bahamas, or by download below, or from local news papers and in the Family Islands at the Administrator’s Office or the District Education Offices of the Ministry Of Education.
All entries must be delivered to the Central Bank of The Bahamas no later than Friday, 29th October 2010.

NB:
- Only works of the highest quality and presented in accordance with the guidelines will be judged and exhibited. Works not exhibited will be stored only for 60 days after opening of the exhibition. The Central Bank of The Bahamas will not be responsible for works left beyond this period.
- All sold pieces may be removed from the exhibition after Tuesday, November 30th.
